Spanish Awareness Week Please join NHS Spanish Club in celebrating Spanish Awareness week October 20-24 as part of our nation’s Hispanic Heritage Month. You can participate in our themed days: Monday-Immersion Day, Tuesday-Country Day, Wednesday- Famous Hispanic Day, Thursday- Travelers Day, Friday- Spanish Club Shirt (or clothes with Spanish words) We will have a bake sale fundraiser before school in the Commons Tuesday- Friday for students traveling to Italy and Spain this summer. Come buy a tasty treat!

Athletic Leadership Council... Athletic Leadership Council members who are helping with the 'Trunk or Treat' at High Pointe should stop by the AD office asap to pick up information. The form provided requires a parent/guardian signature.

New Student Pizza Party There will be a New Student Pizza Party during 6th hour on Wed. October 22nd in the lobby auditorium. All new students should make plans to attend! For any questions please stop by the counselor’s office.

G-Tennis & G-Golf athlete survey... Girls tennis and girls golf athletes should report to the computer lab in room 275 immediately after school Tue, Oct 21 to complete the athlete survey.

Football TONIGHT... The JV football game vs. Republic will be at home 6:00 pm. The freshman game vs. Republic will be away at 6:00 pm.

Red Ribbon Week Monday - October 27th - Hat day – Hats off to being drug free! Tuesday – October 28th – Wear neon -I’m too bright for drugs! Wednesday-October 29th – Pajama day - Your choices are key to your dreams! Thursday– October 30th –Dress up! –Dress for Success Day: Dream It, Believe It and Achieve It! Be Drug Free! Friday – October 31st – Happy Halloween! Dress up to say, “There’s no hope for dope!”

Interact Club Meeting There will be an Interact Club meeting after school on October 22 in the third floor lecture hall. We will be voting on t-shirts and discussing upcoming service projects. See you there!

Al ly Pledge Thank you to everyone who took the Ally Pledge. We had 251 students and staff pledge that they believe schools should be safe, supportive places for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. Together, we can all work together to make Nixa High School a safe space for all students.

Italy and Spain Trip If you are interested in traveling to Italy and Spain with Nixa World Travelers in July please attend a meeting right after school in Room 171 on Thursday 10/23 . Parents are welcome to attend. This will be your last chance to sign up for the trip.

Megan Meier Memorial Scholarship Information regarding the Megan Meier Memorial Scholarship can be found at http://www.meganmeierfoundation.org/megan-meier-memorial-scholarship.html This scholarship is open to any senior with a 2.5 GPA who believes they have made a positive impact in regards to the issues surrounding bullying and cyberbullying in their own school environment and community. Deadline is November 7th.

College Visits A representative will be available to talk with interested students during STAR. There is a sign-up sheet in the counseling center for each college/university. UMKC: 10/21 Mizzou: 11/5 BBC: 11/13

Nurse For A Day Registration for the Nurse for a Day workshop is open. This workshop will help students better understand the challenging, yet rewarding, field of Nursing. Registration if on a first come, first served basis. Prudential Spirit of Community Award Any student who have participated in a volunteer service activity in the past year can apply for the 2015 Prudential Spirit of Community Award. More information and application can be found at http://spirit.prudential.com. Return the required documents to the counseling center once you have applied.

Elks Scholarship Applications for the Elks National Foundation, Inc. 2015 Most Valuable Student Scholarship Contest is now available. You can obtain an application by visiting www.elks.org/enf/scholars/mvs.cfm The counseling center has the address for application submission. Do not submit your application to the local Elks Lodge. The deadline for submission is December 5. The Elks also offer a scholarship to children and grandchildren of Elks members. This application is available at www.elks.org/enf/scholars

Young Entrepreneur Award Applications are being accepted for the Young Entrepreneur Award. Applications can be found at www.nfib.com/YEA The deadline for submission is December 18.

Horatio Alger Scholarship Information regarding the Horatio Alger Scholarship is available online at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships This scholarship is available for seniors with a 2.0 GPA, involved in co-curricular and community service activities, and demonstrate critical financial need ($55,000 or lower adjusted gross family income)

MO JCI Senate Foundation Scholarship The Missouri JCI Senate Foundation has a $250.00 scholarship available. Apply online at http://usjcisenate.org/index.php/scholarship-program The deadline for application is January 9, 2015.

JFK Profile in Courage Essay The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation invites high school students to write an essay on an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1956. Contest information, registration, and to submit your essay, visit the Profile in Courage Essay Contest at www.jfklibrary.org

Cox College Cox College will hold their Open House event on November 1 from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. For more information call 417-269-3401

COMPASS A sign-up sheet is available for students interested in taking the COMPASS. The COMPASS is for students who have not taken and ACT, SAT, or ASVAB and for those students planning on attending OTC in the fall. The testing dates are November 11th and 12th. You will need to sign up for one date only.

Ranken Visit A representative from Ranken will be here on November 14th to talk with students about their automotive program. This program allows students to attend classes for 8 weeks and then work in a paid internship for 8 weeks. A sign-up sheet is in the counseling center.
